Trekkers Information Management Trekker’s Information (TIMS)

Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) is a popular term in tourism industry of Nepal. It is a system developed to manage the information regarding the foreign visitors and trekkers in Nepal. This system whole purpose is for the safety and security of every traveler and trekkers. The card contains general questions regarding travel destination and some personal information. For instance, like trekking area, number of days of travel, itinerary, handling agencies and other common personal information of trekker. All the data are kept in the system whose access is only available to tourism board and government agencies.

The provision of Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) card was implemented on 1st January, 2008. By the joint effort of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).Therefore, the sole purpose for its implementation was:

  • To avoid illegal trekking operations in Nepal
  • To ensure safety and security of the trekkers
  • For data management i.e. for record purpose in case information required in any emergency situations.

Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) card is mandatory for trekking to any regions in Nepal. Travelers can take the card individually or for a group. If a group of people are travelling to same destination for same days then group TIMS card are available too. TIMS card is mandatory because you have to show them at every check post during trekking.

  1. Where can one obtain Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) card?

For free individual trekkers trekking on their own, they can obtain Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) card from Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or in Pokhara. Or you can also obtain the card from Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) Secretariat. You just have to fill up the form and you will get your TIMS card. The form contains basic question which you can easily fill yourself.

 

  1. What is the working hours of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB)

The general working hours of TAAN and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sunday to Friday a week.

 

  1. What documents do you require to obtain Trekkers Information Management system (TIMS) card?

You will require a photocopy of your passport and two passport sized photographs.

 

In case, you are a free individual traveler, then Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card preparation is on your own. But if you travelling with travel agency like Himal Eco Treks, your Trekkers TIMS card is our responsibility.

At last, if you are an individual traveler with no guide then you will have to make your TIMS card yourself. However, if you are travelling with a trekking agency like Himal Eco Treks then you don’t need to worry about any thing.
