Trip Overview

Makalu Base Camp-Kongma La Pass Trek is one of the less traveled, remote trekking trails in Nepal which was recently open for the enthusiastic trekkers to appreciate the beauty of fifth highest mountain of the world i.e. Mt. Makalu in its natural and pristine attire. In this trekking journey, we bend along the Makalu Barun National Park which extends to five major ecological zones. We pass lush, tropical Arun valley, dense forests of rhododendron, fir and alpine meadows. Owing to its natural and ecological diversity, this region is popular for its unique flora and faunas. Likewise, Makalu Base Camp Trek can be an opportunity to encounter the unique flora and faunas of various ecological zones in Nepal.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day
Arrive at the airport in Kathmandu. You guide will pick you up and escort you to the hotel for check in. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 2: Trek preparation and Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour
We will prepare for your trekking permits. Meanwhile, your guide will escort you to the UNESCO listed heritage sites in Kathmandu i.e. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath stupa, Pashupatinath temple and Boudhanath stupa.
Day 3: Fly to Tumlingtar and drive to Mane Bhanjyang
Today, we take a flight to Tumlingtar and drive in a jeep to Mane Bhanjyang. Overnight at Mane Bhanjyang.
Day 4: Trek to Chichira
We start our trekking through a flat trail that ascends on to a ridge. We further walk through fertile land and forests until we reach to the village of Chichira. From this village, the scene of Mt. Makalu and Kumbakarna range comes in to sight. Overnight stay at a tented camp in Chichira.
Day 5: Trek to Num
Today, we start climbing on to the ridge. On our way, we pass lush forests of oak, rhododendron and hermlocks. Then we descend down to a small village in the region called Num. Overnight stay at a tented camps in Num.
Day 6: Trek to Seduwa
Today we follow our trail to Seduwa. We descend down to the Arun river, cross a suspension bridge over the river and ascend up. We pass Runruma and continue to the village of Seduwa. Overnight at a tented camp in Seduwa.
Day 7: Trek to Tashi Gaon
We follow our trail to Tashi Gaun. A short walk from Seduwa takes you to the country side farm in the villages. After walking through the easy trail, we ascend uphill for about an hour to Tashi Gaon. On our way, we pass beautiful rice and millet fields. Overnight at a tented camp in Tashi Gaun.
Day 8: Trek to Kauma Danda (Khongma Danda)
Leaving Tashi Gaon, we walk along the pleasing shade of oak and rhododendron forests. We pass the dense forests to summer pastures. From Tashi Gaon, no signs of villages are seen. Only few huts made by shepherd comes into sight. We then continue our trail uphill to Kauma Danda. At this point, the surrounding is more deserted with no sign of trees, few shrubs can be seen. Overnight at a tented camp in Kauma Danda.
Day 9: Acclimatization day in Kauma Danda
The day is set aside for acclimatization so as to avoid altitude sickness. We can spend the day wandering around the area. The views of Mt. Makalu and Kumbakarna range from this point is fabulous. Again, the white snowy ranges in the light of the moon, your night can be one of the special ones.
Day 10: Trek to Mumbuk via Tutu La
With the backdrop of beautiful mountains, we follow our tail, take few ups and downs. We cross big pond and then small pond and continue walking until we cross Keke La Pass and Tulu La Pass. We descend down to a vegetation and cross forests to Mambuck, our camping place for the night.
Day 11: Trek to Yangri Kharka
Today, we take a steep descend down to a valley, cross Barun river and follow upstream until we reach Yangri Kharka. Yangri Kharka is a grazing area for herd. Overnight at a camp in Yangri Kharka.
Day 12: Trek to Shershong Base Camp
From Yangri Kharka, we continue up the Valley of Upper Barun River and follow our trail to Lengmale Kharka. A short ascend from this Kharka takes us to the Shershong Base Camp (Also referred as Makalu Base Camp). Overnight at a tented camps in Shershong Base Camp.
Day 13: Acclimatization in Shershong Base Camp
Today is set aside for acclimatization in Shershong Base Camp. We can hike up to some vantage points to endeavour the beauty of mountains in the Makalu region like Mt. Makalu, Kumbakarna range and many more. Overnight at a tented camps in Shershong Base Camp.
Day 14: Descend to Mumbuk
Today, we leave Barun valley behind us and descend down to Mumbuk for an overnight stay.
Day 15: Trek to Kauma la
Enjoying the views of awe inspiring mountains, we reverse our journey back to Kauma La. Overnight at Kauma Danda,
Day 16: Trek to Seduwa
Today we continue down our trail through Tashi gaun to Seduwa village. Overnight at the camps in Seduwa.
Day 17: Trek to Mudhe
As we descend down, our trail gets easier and easier. We trek down to Mude along the lush landscape. Overnight at a tented camp in Mudhe.
Day 18: Trek to Bhotebas
Leaving Mude behind, we continue our trail to Bhotebas, our halting stop for the night.
Day 19: Trek to Tumlingtar
Today, we end our trekking journey as we leave Bhotebas and walk along the trail to Tumlingtar. Overnight stay at Tumlingtar.
Day 20: Fly back to Kathmandu
After accomplishing our trekking journey in Tumlingtar, we fly back to Kathmandu. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 21: Leisure Day in Kathmandu
A leisure day in Kathmandu. You can enjoy the day strolling down the streets in Kathmandu and enjoy shopping in the malls. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 22: Departure Day
Your guide will escort you to the airport before your scheduled flight for your journey ahead.
