Trip Overview

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking is one and only way of being close to Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world Which is the best remote area trekking in Nepal. Taste the grandeur of Mt. Kanchenjunga along with the inspiring landscape around the trail. In fact, the captivating beauty of this region will keep you in awe. The Kanchenjunga range is stuck up high in the blue sky like a row of thorns. The word “Kanchenjunga” is derived from a Tibetan dictionary which means “five jewels of the snow”. As a matter of fact, the Kanchenjunga range has five peaks which are considered as five treasures in the real world namely gold, silver, precious stones, grains and holy sculptures.

This is one of the remote regions of Nepal. Thus, it is still at its natural glory. The trekking route of Kanchenjunga Base Camp lies in the eastern region of Nepal. It has recently been accessible persuading many travelers around the globe. Overall, this trek starts from the low altitude region i.e. plain land of Terai and rises up to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp at an elevation of 5,160 meters. You pass low river valley, dense sub-tropical forests and alpine grasslands to rocky hills. This variation makes Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek an opportunity to experience the diverse terrain and change in vegetation and wildlife due to it.

The trail of this trek goes through Kanchenjunga Conservation Area which is home to diverse species of birds and animals. Wildlife like the birds, animals, and pheasant like a red-billed blue magpie, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, red panda, etc are found in this region. Similarly, the fauna like rhododendron, orchids and lily blossom found in this region are lovely. When you reach the Base Camp, you can see the stunning views of mountains like Mt. Kumbhakarna, Mt. Kiratchuli, Mt. Nepal Peak, Mt. Pathibhara, and Mt. Chang.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek starts with a flight to Bhadrapur. Then we take a wonderful drive to Taplejung via Phidim. The view of a tea garden in Phidim is beautiful. And so is the lush landscape as we pass the villages of Cirwa, Sekathum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, and Gunsa. After a day of acclimatization in Gunsa, we ascend up to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (Pang Pema) via Kambachen and Lhonak. Then we will return back to Gunsa and hike through the passes like Sinion La, Mirgin La, and Sibelapcham La to Oktang Base Camp. We further walk back through Khebang and Kandembe to Illam. We end our journey with a return flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu. So, are you ready for this journey with Himal Eco Treks?

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day
Our representative will be there at the airport to pick you up upon your arrival. You will then be transferred to the hotel for check-in. Your guide will explain to you the plans ahead. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 2: Sightseeing tour and trek preparation
We need a day to prepare your trek permit and other necessary documents. Meanwhile, you can take a tour around the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath stupa, Pashupatinath temple, and Boudhanath stupa are the major attractions. You can also utilize the day for last-minute trek preparations. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 3: Fly to Bhadrapur and drive to Phidim
Today, we take our flight to Biratnagar/Bhadrapur as per your preference and drive to Phidim. The drive in itself is a beautiful experience; in between the jungles, getting acquainted with the Terai region of Nepal. Overnight stay at a hotel in Phidim.
Day 4: Drive to Taplejung and trek to Mitlung (880msl)
Today, we drive to Taplejung and start our actual trekking journey. Today, we walk through the fertile land, cross the Hungdewa Khola and Tamur rivers, and descend down to Mitlung village. Overnight stay at a guesthouse in Mitlung.
Day 5: Trek to Chirwa (1190msl)
Our trail today to Chirwa consists of some ascends as well as descends. We continue descending until we reach a village called Tawa. From this point, we slightly ascend to cross a suspension bridge in Thiwa. Admiring the beautiful landscape in the Kanchenjunga region, we make our way to a Limbu village called Chirwa. This would be our halting stop for the night.
Day 6: Trek to Sekathum (1640msl)
We follow our trail through dense forests and cardamom fields. We pass Olang Chung Gola, the entry point of Kanchenjunga National Park. The trail for the day goes uphill and then descends slowly. We pass the Ghunsa river and Shimbuwa river to Sekathum village, our halting stop for the day. The lush landscape that we pass today transforms more and more as we open to the valley, which is simply a phenomenon.
Day 7: Trek to Amjilosa (2490msl)
Our trail for the day is quite challenging. We leave Sekathum behind, cross a suspension bridge, and enter a dense forest. We then ascend through a steep trail and again descend to cross a river. We follow our trail until we reach Amjilosa village for an overnight rest.
Day 8: Trek to Gyabla (2730msl)
Today is an easy trek day where we start our journey along the river bank and make our way to dense bamboo, rhododendron, and fir forests. We cross the forest, enjoying the natural scenery with no hint of settlement nearby. On our way ahead, we will be blessed with the view of a mesmerizing waterfall. We then followed our trail uphill until we reached Gyabla, a Tibetan-influenced settlement, which would be our halting point for the day.
Day 9: Trek to Ghunsa (3410msl)
Today we descend down the river and follow our trail to a Tibetan refugee settlement called Phale. We then cross pine and conifer forest to a village named Ghunsa, our stop for today. Ghunsa is a popular Sherpa in this region known for its hydroelectric plant. It is also a place where a tragic helicopter crash took place taking life of twenty conservationists.
Day 10: Acclimatization in Ghunsa
Today is a free day in Ghunsa separated for acclimatization. We may wander around the village, meet locals, and get some insights about their lifestyle, culture, and tradition. We may also go for a short hike to Lapsan La. Overnight stay at Ghunsa.
Day 11: Trek to Kambachen (4150msl)
Today, we follow the river bank and initiate our journey further north. We walk through highland vegetation, pass forests, cross several bridges and waterfalls on our way to Kambachen. We stay at Kambachen for the night.
Day 12: Trek to Lhonak (4790msl)
Today can be a comparatively harsher day than other days as you have to walk through rocky terrain on the hillside. We then pass a stunningly beautiful waterfall and cross a suspension bridge over the river to Ramtang. We continue our journey to Lhonak, where we stop for an overnight halt.
Day 13: Hike to Pang Pema (5143msl) and return back to Lhonak
Today, we hike to Pang Pema—Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. The view of the Chang Himal, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and Jannu from this point is marvelous. We return back to Lhonak from the base camp for an overnight stay.
Day 14: Trek to Ghunsa (3410msl)
Today, we retrace our way to Ghunsa via Ramtang and Kambachen. The views of the mountains like Mt. Kanchenjunga, Taple Sikhar, Kirat Chuli, Gimmigela, etc. on our way are simply spectacular. Overnight stay at Ghunsa.
Day 15: Trek to Selele (4110msl)
Today, we take a steep path up to Selele. We pass the dense forest of rhododendron and juniper, and follow our trail uphill until we reach Selele. We stop at Selele for an overnight halt.
Day 16: Pass Sinion La, Mirgin La and Sinelapcha La to Tseram (3870msl)
Today’s trek is quite exciting as we cross three passes in a day. We start with a climb uphill and cross the passes, namely Sinion La Pass, Mirgin La Pass, and Sinelapcha La Pass. The views of the mountains from these passes are phenomenal. After crossing the passes, we follow our trail to Tseram, our night stay spot.
Day 17: Hike to Oktang Base Camp (4700msl)
Today, we hike up to Oktang Base Camp. We ascend slowly, pass the face of Yalung glacier, and walk along the Simbhuwa river. We pass through Lapsang village and finally reach Ramche. We further ascend to the valley and follow a stream which takes us to the top of the moraine. The view of the southern face of Kanchenjunga from this point is outstanding. The view of Jannu Himal will add to this hike. We then descend to Tseram for an overnight stay.
Day 18: Trek to Torangden (2990msl)
Today, we descend along the Sinbhuwa khola, passing forests of rhododendron and pine to Torangden, which would be our stopping point for the night.
Day 19: Trek to Yamphudin (2080msl)
We further descend to Yamphudin. Yamphudin is a village inhabited by the people of various ethnic groups like Rai, Limbu, Magar, Gurung, etc. On our way to Yamphudin, you will come through some areas of landslide. The route is quite risky during the rainy season. Overnight stay at Yamphudin.
Day 20: Trek to Khebang (1915msl)
Today, we follow our trail to Khebang. We pass some Brahmin and Chhetri villages on the way as we reach Khebang. Overnight halt at Khebang.
Day 21: Trek to Khandembe
From Khebang, we follow our trail to Khandembe through some villages in the region. Overnight stay at Khandembe.
Day 22: Trek to Medibung and drive to Illam
Today, we walk until we reach Medibung. From Medibung, we take a scenic drive to Illam, admiring the views of beautiful tea gardens. Overnight stay at Illam.
Day 23: Drive to Bhadrapur
Today, we drive 3 hrs to Bhadrapur, enjoying the flat landscape of the Terai region of Nepal. We catch an afternoon flight to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 24: Free day in Kathmandu
Today you have a free day. You can do any other relaxation activities to let go of the exhaustion from travelling. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 25: Free Day in Kathmandu
Today is a free day in Kathmandu. You can either take a rest to get rid of all the trekking exhaustion or utilize the day for shopping around the city or in the malls. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 26: Departure Day
Our representative will escort you to the airport before the scheduled time for your journey ahead.
